DeSoto FC has several teams competing for a chance to play in the US Youth Soccer National Championships. First, they have a place high enough in the Regional President’s Cup. To qualify for the Regional President’s Cup, they have to finish in the top 2 in the Mississippi Competitive Soccer League (MCSL). The MCSL is created for all properly registered MSA competitive teams, age divisions u13-u18. The MCSL is the first qualifying stage for the MSA Premier Cup Tournament/USYS Regional events/ USYS National Championships. Our Premier squads from the 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2004 boys age groups all played this past weekend in Jackson in MCSL qualifying events. Our 2008 boys had a strong showing going 2-1-0 (wins-draws-losses) with 7 goals scored and only 1 goal allowed. Victories included a strong win over Mississippi powerhouse Northwest Rankin 4-0 and Brandon FC 2-0. The lone blemish, a 1-1 draw, was to local rival, Tupelo FC. On the weekend, DeSoto FC finished at the top of the table with 7 championship points, Northwest Rankin was second with 6 points, Tupelo was 3rd with 2 points and Brandon FC had 1 point. This puts DeSoto FC in an excellent position going into the final month of the MCSL season. DeSoto FC 2008 boys are ranked 2nd in Mississippi by GotSoccer behind Mississippi Rush Blue.
Our 2007 boys struggled with 1 win and 2 losses earning 3 championship points. They scored 11 goals and allowed 7. DeSoto FC had a commanding win over Brandon FC 9-1, but fell to both Clinton Brilla Juniors and Mississippi Rush 06 Elite 1-3. The match against the 2006 MS Rush Elite was out of age group and did not count towards MCSL standings. It was a good test against tough opposition. Clinton Brilla Juniors led the weekend table with 7 points. DeSoto FC was second with 3 points, and Brandon FC tallied 1 point. DeSoto FC 2007 boys are ranked 3rd in Mississippi by GotSoccer behind IFC Red and Mississippi Rush.
The 2006 boys squad might not have lit up the scoreboard, but solid defense kept them in the hunt. They went 1-2-0 scoring 2 goals and allowing 1. Our 2006 boys squad is currently ranked 6th in Mississippi according to Sinc Sports and GotSoccer. This squad has come a long way since the start of the season under the direction of coach Charlie Baldwin. They are coming together at the right time and look to make a strong case to be included in the Regional President’s Cup this summer.
The 2005 squad, seeking to return to the Southern Regional President’s Cup, earned 5 points going 1-2-0 while finding the net 11 times and conceding 3 goals. A solid 8-0 win over local rival Oxford FC set the tone and draws against Tupelo and the DeSoto FC 2006 boys rounded out the MCSL weekend. Our 2005 boys squad is currently ranked 5th in Mississippi according to Sinc Sports and 4th according to GotSoccer. They are in a good position to have a strong showing in the President’s Cup, which is hosted by DeSoto FC in Southaven in May. A return trip to the Southern Regional President’s Cup is within reach.
Finally, the 2004 boys, looking for a return trip to the Southern Regional President’s Cup as well, had the most dominating showing of all going 2-1-0 scoring 11 goals and allowing only 1. Our 2004 boys squad is ranked 2nd in Mississippi behind Gulf Coast United according to Sinc Sports. They are in championship form heading into May.
